Solution-Focused Brief Therapy

"The core aim of Solution- focused brief therapy is to seed hope." Yvonne M. Dolan, 1991

Solution-Focused (Brief) Therapy (SFBT) is a goal-directed collaborative approach to psychotherapeutic change that is conducted through direct observation of clients' responses to a series of precisely constructed questions. Based upon social constructionist thinking and Wittgensteinian philosophy. While listening to, validating and holding the clients story SFBT focuses on addressing what clients want to achieve in order to improve the quality of their lives and to find solutions to perceived problem(s).

SF therapy sessions typically focus on the present and future, focusing on the past only to the degree necessary for communicating empathy and accurate understanding of the client's concerns.

Solution Focused Supervision

An empowering approach that helps practitioners to:
  • Be more aware of their significance in influencing situations
  • Be more aware of their skills and resources
  • Assess wherever they are "stuck"
  • Discover which of their current strategies work for them
  • Utilise their inherent skills and coping mechanisms
  • Map out what, if any, change needed
  • Identify who can do what to help change take place.
